There are three bathrooms in this family gathering house in northern Michigan, two with walk-in showers and one powder room. All three sport the same Menard’s brown/gray quarry tile flooring, Home Depot white subway tile and open vanities custom made from cherry wood, a sentimental choice for northern Michigan where the house is surrounded by cherry orchards.
Although so many decisions were made because of use (multiple extended family members at once) and cost, there was never a compromise in the design. The savings on tile from big box stores and sinks from the building supply outlet allowed for the simple, open, but custom vanities. IKEA cubbies are utilized in two of the bathrooms allowing each family member to claim a cubby for their “stuff” for the duration of their stay, and keeping the counters free and clear.
I followed a “square” motif in the bathrooms as well as all throughout the house creating a calm, no-nonsense vibe that just seemed right.
